Lead generation, explained

What lead generation is, how it works when you run ads, and the parts that decide how many clicks become real enquiries.

What is lead generation?

Lead generation is the work of getting people who might buy from you to raise their hand — to send their name, phone number or email so you can follow up. A lead is that person: someone who has shown interest but has not bought yet.

For most service businesses, D2C brands and B2B companies, leads arrive through a form, a phone call or a WhatsApp message. The job of lead generation is to make that happen more often, from the right people, at a cost that makes sense.

How lead generation works when you run ads

When you pay for Google Ads or Meta ads, every lead follows the same path:

  1. The ad reaches someone with a need and makes a promise.
  2. The click takes them to a page — usually your landing page.
  3. The page keeps the ad’s promise, answers their doubts and asks for one action.
  4. The form or call captures their details.
  5. The follow-up — a call, WhatsApp message or email — turns the lead into a conversation.

Each step loses people. Ads earn the attention; the page and the follow-up decide how much of what you paid for turns into leads and sales.

Inbound and outbound lead generation

Inbound lead generation brings people to you: search ads, social ads, SEO, content and referrals. Outbound means you reach out first: cold calls, emails or LinkedIn messages. Most growing businesses use both, but inbound leads usually arrive warmer, because the person came looking.

The parts that decide how many leads you get

1. A landing page built for the ad

Sending ad traffic to your home page makes people hunt for what the ad promised. A landing page built for one campaign repeats the ad’s promise in the headline, explains the offer and asks for one action. That focus is what turns clicks into leads.

2. An offer worth responding to

“Contact us” is not an offer. A free quote, a consultation, a sample, a price list or a page check gives people a reason to share their details now rather than later.

3. A short, easy form

Every extra field is one more reason to leave. Ask only for what you need to follow up — often a name and a phone number or email — and let people call or message on WhatsApp if they prefer.

4. Proof next to the ask

Real reviews, client logos, photos of your work and clear guarantees answer the question “can I trust them?” right where people decide.

5. Speed on a phone

Most ad clicks happen on phones. A page that takes several seconds to load loses people before they read a word. Aim for a page that loads in about two seconds on a normal mobile connection.

6. Tracking you can trust

Set up conversion tracking — the Google Ads conversion tag, GA4 events and the Meta Pixel — for forms, calls and WhatsApp clicks. Without it, your ad platforms optimise for clicks instead of leads, and you cannot see which campaigns pay for themselves. Our Google Ads landing pages come with it set up.

7. Fast follow-up

A lead goes cold quickly. Send every enquiry straight to your CRM and to WhatsApp so someone replies while the person is still thinking about you.

How to measure lead generation

  • Conversion rate — leads divided by visitors to the page.
  • Cost per lead — ad spend divided by leads.
  • Lead quality — how many leads become real conversations, quotes and sales.
  • Cost per sale — the number that tells you whether the whole system pays.

Watch them together. A cheaper lead that never buys is not a better lead.

Common lead generation mistakes

  • Sending every ad to the home page.
  • Long forms that ask for everything up front.
  • No tracking, so budgets follow clicks, not leads.
  • Pages that load slowly on phones.
  • Leads sitting in an inbox for a day before anyone replies.
